Academic quality management strategy for international accreditation of the Latin American School of Medicine

Abstract

Introduction: This research applies theoretical and diagnostic principles within a quality management framework for the international accreditation of the Latin American School of Medicine (Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina). It analyzes the structure, operation, and evaluation of a strategy designed to transition the institution toward an institutionalized culture of academic excellence. Objective: To design an academic quality management strategy aimed at achieving international accreditation for the Latin American School of Medicine. Methods: This study examines technological development. The main variable was defined through parameterization into dimensions and indicators. Data collection included documentary analysis, surveys of 822 individuals, interviews with 53 executives, and consultations with 25 specialists for evaluation. Methodological triangulation was employed to ensure greater validity and consistency of the findings. Results: The Latin American School of Medicine was found to possess a solid organizational and academic foundation for international accreditation. The diagnosis revealed gaps in alignment with global standards and in the consolidation of evidence systems. The designed strategy integrates continuous improvement principles and international agency criteria, receiving favorable assessments from specialists. The implementation of the proposal reveals that the model is viable, supported by process-based management, collective participation, and transparency regarding external evaluating agencies.

Conclusions: The strategy is configured as a cyclic system that coordinates self-evaluation, strategic planning, and monitoring. It transforms quality management into a participatory process aimed at meeting global standards.
