Maternal mortality in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala (2012-2015)

Introduction: The death of a mother is one of the most traumatic experiences that families suffer. Health services must be prepared to care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. In 2011, Guatemala reported a high number of these deaths related to the high levels of precariousness and vulnerability of women.
Objective: To identify the sociodemographic and health care characteristics of the cases of maternal death reported in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala between 2012 and 2015.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. The universe consisted of 182 women who died due to causes associated with pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in Alta Verapaz. Information was obtained from the mortality records that were summarized in percentages and rates.
Results: Maternal mortality affected the 17 municipalities in Alta Verapaz. The ratio was 273.55 per 100,000 registered live births. The main causes were: hemorrhages, pregnancy-induced hypertension and sepsis. 71% of those killed corresponded to the first three delays related to family and community.
Conclusions: Maternal death represents a public health problem that can be reduced with proper health management.
