Introduction: Current times demand competent health managers to face the challenges imposed by the improvement of the Cuban social project, in order to achieve qualitatively superior results.
Objective: To compare the self-assessment made by the cadres of the Municipal Health Directorate of Cienfuegos on the competences they should have as managers and those they actually possess.
Methods: It was a developmental research that involved 92 cadres at Municipal Health Directorate in Cienfuegos. The universe was 136, selected by simple random sampling of proportions, carried out from January to June 2019. Theoretical and empirical methods were used to understand the essence of the problem.
Results: More than 97% of the participants considered that the position they hold requires to a high degree the competencies about which they were surveyed. The following were identified as those they possess to a high degree: achievement motivation, political-ideological preparation, commitment to the organization, self-control and discipline. More than 50% considered that they had a medium degree of strategic thinking, were competent in developing human capital, as well as in solving problems and conflicts and applying negotiation techniques. Time management was recognized as the lowest performing indicator in the intra-strategic competencies.
Conclusions: The managers recognize that the position they hold requires them to possess to a high degree all the competencies on which they were surveyed, the greatest difficulties are recognized in the strategic and intrastrategic competencies they possess, which reveals the need to propose actions to solve the insufficiencies identified.Downloads
