Introduction: In medical practice, the efficient use of medications has economic and social implications. In Cienfuegos, in view of the increase in the budget for medicines used in the "Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" Hospital, this research is necessary.
Objectives: To identify the consumption and cost of medicines at the "Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" Hospital.
Methods: A partial economic evaluation of cost description type was developed in 2017 and a qualitative study to describe the actions proposed at the institutional level for the improvement of planning and efficient use of resources.
Results: 2 722 405 units of medicines were consumed (14 million 644 thousand 689 Cuban pesos). The 21 category A drugs (3.8%) accounted for 78.7% of the total cost, while 16.3% of the cost was accounted for by category B drugs. The 440 drugs in category C accounted for 4.9% of the cost. Elements were provided on the factors that influence the use of medicines in the hospital and actions for improving planning, such as improving the monitoring of medical prescriptions in the different services and updating institutional treatment protocols.
Conclusions: More than half of the drug budget is concentrated in a few of the basic institutional drug list, so the analysis of these drugs in the Pharmacotherapeutic Committee should be increased.
Keywords: pharmacoepidemiology; drug; cost; efficiency planning; cost methods.
