Individual and community response in the development of the COVID-19 epidemic (Havana, 2020)

Introduction: The COVID-19 epidemic in Havana had peculiarities in its first year of evolution that differentiate it from what occurred in the other territories of the country, so the influence of place, time and people in its development is considered.
Objective: To describe the peculiarities of the individual and community response in the development of the COVID-19 epidemic in Havana in 2020.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive research was carried out in Havana from March to December 2020. Information was taken from 4913 persons diagnosed with COVID-19 in that period. The variables selected were confirmed cases, municipality of residence, age, sex, source of infection, presence of symptoms and status at discharge. The information was summarized using absolute frequencies, percentages and rates.
Results: The municipalities of Regla, Cotorro, Centro Habana and La Lisa presented incidence rates higher than those of the province. The most affected age groups were 20 to 39 years old and 40 to 59 years old, with discrete differences in terms of sex. The highest risk of dying from COVID-19 was in Old Havana, Cotorro, Plaza de la Revolución and Marianao with 4 %, 3.6 %, 3.8 % and 2 % of lethality, respectively. Asymptomatic and autochthonous patients predominated except in the last two months of the year.
Conclusions: The individual and community response in the development of the epidemic in Havana presented peculiarities related to its territorial distribution and the characteristics of the resident population exposed to the coronavirus.
