Introduction: The XAVIA PACS-RIS imaging information management platform was designed to provide medical staff in diagnostic imaging departments with a set of general tools for viewing, processing, and editing digital medical images, as well as the reports they produce. It consists of several highly integrated components compatible with the international DICOM standard and offers a scalable solution adaptable to the needs of different healthcare facilities.
Objective: To describe the results and impact of the XAVIA-PACS RIS platform in the western and central provinces of Cuba.
Methods: An explanatory strategy was developed, and documentary analysis, expert consultation, and statistical data acquisition were used to obtain and process the results.
Results: XAVIA PACS-RIS enables the comparison of patient medical images obtained at different times, second-opinion consultations with internal and external physicians, and improved accuracy, reliability, and reduced access time to studies from any viewing station. It has been implemented in 25 healthcare institutions in western and central Cuba with positive results. In these institutions, the system is used on 307 workstations.
Conclusions: The platform has enabled the replacement of expensive imports for Cuba, such as radiographic plates and developing fluids. It has led to improved service quality and the digital transformation of radiology in the institutions where it is used.
