Economic analysis of actions against cervical cancer in Cuba

Introduction: In Cuba, the implementation of screening for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer is a basic component of cervical cancer control, and it is therefore necessary to optimize these actions. This study is based on the convenience of knowing the costs of cervical cancer in Cuba, and the need to optimize screening with the efficient combination of cytological testing and HPV testing.
Objective: To carry out an economic analysis of the costs of cervical cancer in the country to assess the feasibility of using an HPV test in women between 30 and 30 years of age. HPV test in women aged 30-50 years.
Methods: The study was divided into two parts: the first part estimated the costs of cervical cancer in Cuba by stage of disease, and the second part compared the cost-effectiveness of relevant options for introducing HPV testing combined with cytological testing in the Cuban context.
Results: The costs of cervical cancer in Cuba vary according to the stage of the disease. The key cost components were colposcopy visits, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and follow-up consultations, which directly influenced the evolution of the cost per care process.
Conclusions: The decision to introduce HPV testing is cost-effective and will provide accurate diagnoses and thus better use of resources. The study reflected the economic implications of staged cancer and highlighted the importance of cost monitoring in the control of health resources. It would be interesting to extend this type of analysis to other health interventions in order to assess the efficiency of resource use and to provide new sources of information for decision-makers.Downloads
