Dimensions of Active Aging of the Elderly in a Health Area
Keywords:
active aging, elderly, dimensions of active agingAbstract
Introduction: One of the most notable demographic trends of today is the aging of the population. The development of a new paradigm focused on the positive view of this stage of life is linked to the definition of active aging, offered by the World Health Organization, as a process of optimizing opportunities for comprehensive health, participation and security of people as they age, in order to ensure their quality of life.
Objective: To characterize the dimensions of active aging in older persons attended in a health area.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. A questionnaire on active aging, validated in Cuba, was used. It was applied to 176 people aged 60 years and over, belonging to the clinic No. 14 of the Teaching Policlinic Luis A. Turcios Lima, in the Havana municipality of Diez de Octubre, in 2022. A semi-structured interview was carried out with a subsample of 30 elderly people of the area in order to deepen in the dimensions.
Results: Physical health status and self-care actions were found to be moderately affected. Psychological well-being, life satisfaction, perception of loneliness and social security showed a favorable trend, but not community participation, economic security, continuous learning and perception of respect from others.
Conclusions: The study made it possible to identify the behavior of the dimensions with the best results as well as those most affected, which opens the perspective of carrying out interventions on the subject in the area investigated and of continuing the exploration of the dimensions of active aging in other health areas and municipalities of the Cuban capital.
