Introduction: Teacher training and the development of virtual training processes are an identified need in higher medical education.
Objective: To describe the strategy for preparing teachers to integrate e-learning into their teaching.
Procedures used to collect the information: A systematisation of the actions carried out in the last 10 years at the Virtual Health University to guarantee the preparation of teachers was carried out. Theoretical methods of analysis-synthesis and historical-logical methods were used; in empirical methods, documentary analysis and systematisation of experiences were used.
Results: The strategy defined goal, scope, target audience, rationale and components, which included training for the design and set-up of virtual environments; a virtual course for online tutoring; a diploma course in online learning; workshops, short courses and two virtual events for the exchange of experiences.
Conclusions. It is important to continue promoting the strategy of preparing teachers with different forms of professional development, which allows the social purpose of the Virtual University to be fulfilled with the use of new educational approaches, in which information and communication technologies are an unquestionable opportunity to raise the quality of the teaching-educational process.
