Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal plastic surgery is a therapeutic tool in the treatment of mucogingival disorders, aimed at restoring aesthetics, functionality, and periodontal health. The use of complementary technologies has improved clinical outcomes, with laser photobiomodulatory therapy (PBMT) standing out as an effective option. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of single-session protocol is consolidated as an optimal strategy in periodontal surgery. Its ability to offer greater clinical effectiveness in acute pain control and accelerated healing, laser PBMT in relieving pain and promoting healing in patients undergoing periodontal plastic surgery.

Method: A prospective analytical study was conducted with 142 patients divided into Group A (PBMT in multiple sessions) and Group B (PBMT in a single session). Pain was assessed at 24, 48, and 72 hours, healing at 7 and 30 days, the occurrence of adverse events, and treatment cost.

Results: Group B was superior in acute pain control (53.5% vs. 31.7% pain-free at 24 h; p = 0.000) and faster healing at 7 days (p = 0.018). At 30 days, both groups achieved similar clinical effectiveness (94.1% vs. 93.1%; p = 1.00), with comparable safety profiles. In economic terms, the single session represented an 85% cost reduction (454.27 CUP vs. 3220.61 CUP; p = 0.00). Conclusion: The single-session laser PBMT application along with a significant cost reduction, positions it as an efficient and safe alternative.
