Visibility of chronic renal disease of unknown cause in Central America in Web of Science

Introduction: The increase of the chronic renal disease in Central America is constant so strategies for its prevention are looked for. The publications on this subject differ in approaches and methods; they need to be evaluated in order to strengthen research and establish programs and policies for iliminating the disease.Objective: To characterize the publications on chronic renal disease of unknown cause in Central America in Web of Science.
Methods: A search was made in Web of Science with the keyword "mesoamerican nephropathy". Bibliometric indicators were applied to determine patterns of institutional collaboration, as well as more productive authors and magazines, articles by years and more represented topics.
Results: 87 documents were compiled. The United States and Sweden were the most productive countries. The most repeated institutional collaboration was between Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua León with London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and University of Colorado Denver with Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology. The most productive authors were Richard J Johnson and Catharina Wesseling, 19 (10.7 %). American Journal of Kidney Diseases 12 (13.8 %) and Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation 7 (8.0 %) were the most published; 2016, 34 (39.1 %), was the most productive year.
Conclusions: The scientific production on Mesoamerican chronic renal disease in Web of Science is characterized for being published in international collaboration. The most frequent institutional collaborations are among affected and non-affected countries. Countries, authors and magazines that contribute more to scientific publication are from the United States and Sweden.
