Abstract

Introduction: In view of the appearance of COVID-19, a new or unknown disease, declared pandemic, it is necessary to train human resources of the National Health System and the population in general, to face it with prevention and control measures, with concrete tasks in epidemiological surveillance and medical care, in order to minimize the risk of introduction and dissemination of the New Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) to the country.

Objective: To characterize the professional development activities provided by all the universities of medical sciences in the country in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Development: A descriptive study was carried out on the professional development activities provided as an indispensable part of the teaching component in the Prevention and Control Plan of the new coronavirus. A total of 1,755,701 people were trained throughout the country, including health workers and students, other sectors and mass organizations, in two stages. Among the topics addressed were: biosecurity, management of these patients, actions to be taken in Primary Health Care and hospitals in the pre-epidemic stage, clinical sample collection, the packaging algorithm, transport and receipt of the sample, performance of rapid tests, active screening, and protocols for action.

Conclusions: Cuba has a large number of trained human resources in different areas of knowledge to deal with COVID-19, allowing the country to be considered among those with the best results in the containment of the disease.
