Inequalities in mortality from non-communicable diseases in the elderly according to living conditions in Cuba during the year 2018

Introduction: The Cuban population is ageing and this implies increasingly specialised and complex care for this population group, for which comprehensive information on mortality and morbidity is required to establish strategies to improve quality of life based on the identification of differential health behaviours in territories with different living conditions.
Objective: To identify inequalities in mortality from non-communicable diseases according to living conditions in older people in Cuba during 2018.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to identify the gaps in mortality from selected causes in older people, according to living conditions. Specific mortality rates were calculated by age and living conditions strata. The standardised mortality ratio and the absolute and relative population attributable risk were used to identify the gaps. Rates were adjusted by the direct and indirect method.
Results: The highest mortality risks in the elderly were found in those aged 80 years and older. Heart disease, malignant tumours and cerebrovascular diseases are responsible for excess mortality in the favourable stratum, and influenza, pneumonia and external causes of death in the unfavourable strata.
Conclusions: A higher risk of dying in older people aged 80 and over from non-communicable diseases was evident, these diseases also presented higher risk of death in the stratum of more favourable living conditions while causes of death related to deteriorating living conditions, such as influenza and pneumonia, and external causes showed excess death in the less favourable strata as expected.
